Ultra XX

My piece for the “Hyper Reality Dimension XX” gallery the other week.
This was my tribute to all of the high energy, Saturday morning Jap Heroes of the 70s/80s/90s. Besides my “Evil Ryu” spin on the godfather, Ultraman, other side elements I tried to include were some of this, this, this, and this.
Initially I was going to do a whole piece on Guyver entirely, my personal favourite growing up but I was afraid it wouldn’t be as easily recognizable. So I did the next best thing and created a mash-up instead. So yeh If you don’t know please check Guyver out, I guarantee the most bizarre, dark, violent version of the good old power rangers type you’ll ever see (titty laser cannons? you can’t beat that).
The piece is acrylic and a bit of spray on a 40 x 30 canvas.

Photos of the event are now out courtesy of aMBUSH gallery which can be found here

The online catalogue to check out all of the other works can be found here

Avengers

My ode to Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. After 3+ years of build up this nerdgasm of a film just dropped in Sydney offering some sweet, clean comic book fun. I recommend a must watch, but I probably didn’t have to say that.

Arty Thursdays

Why are art openings always on Thursdays??

The 80s-90s Comic/Cartoon/Video Game themed gallery Hyper Reality Dimension XX went off without a hitch. Good vibes, great numbers, great art. Much thanks to Jono Verzosa for curating and organizing the whole event. It was great meeting all of the artists and hearing from people that they legitimately liked looking at all of the art.

Sydney’s a small place and it was great to finally put a physical face behind stuff i’d seen online. So please check out the works of talented dudes: Gerald Leung, Sam Hoh, Jin Hien Lau, BafCat, OX and Bryn Desmond-Jones to name a few.

Be sure to check out the gallery at aMBUSH before it ends, or the online catalogue when it comes out. Here are some blurry and overall poor photos I took from the night

Thanks to the usual scumbag crew for coming. Much like the Wu-Tang Clan except one of our names could actually be “Wu” or “Tang”.
Jinman is Raekwon.

HYPER REALITY DIMENSION XX

So I’m exhibiting in this show tomorrow, check it out…

aMBUSH Gallery proudly presents HYPER REALITY DIMENSION XX
Hyper Reality Dimension XX is an express ticket to the world of electric cult mythologies birthed during the antiquated age of CRT TV, VHS, and NES.
It’s the summation of all the insane cartoons you’ve watched during the 80’s with adult themes and bad lip-syncing…
All the marked to clear B-grade sci-fi/horror movies your asshole best friend has given you as a “birthday present”…
All the video games whose pixelated graphics were so damn good that they made your eyes bleed and your thumbs sore from extended play…
It’s the manifestation of all the crazy cult shit that your fragile brain has absorbed growing up as a kid and rediscovered in horror and delight as an adult.
Via various techniques and mediums 20 artists regurgitate and re-imagine the cult classics that they so readily devoured during their youth, expressing the oddities and splendour of the modern electric age that has shaped their early years and has infiltrated their art practice today.

Featuring artists Jodee Knowles, Chris Yee, Rebecca Murphy, HOUL, KID9, OX, Bafcat, Claire Orrell, Sam Octigan, Lizzie Nagy, Gerald Leung, Luke Marcatili, BOB, Iconica, Ala Paredes, Bryn Desmond-Jones, Jonathan Verzosa, Sam Hoh, Jacob Rolfe, and Jin Hien Lau.

The opening will take place on Thursday 19 April from 6-9pm at aMBUSH Gallery in Waterloo. Join us for for complimentary drinks provided by Viking Beer, live art, and future beats and rhythms provided by Misworthy and Alice Whyte.

The exhibition will also run alongside an online catalogue with works for sale from 20 to 30 April, allowing interstate buyers to remotely buy works. Information regarding this will be available on the aMBUSH website.

Black Book

I picked up a new A5 sketch book for quick, on-the-fly drawings to keep with me on the reg. Hopefully this will keep things random and fresh, prepping for the “good stuff”.
Here are some things that have resulted so far. (click to enlarge)

Illustration

Been busy working on illustration jobs through Babekuhl aswell as other clients.
Switching styles, going out of the comfort zone.

Some large rice paper prints made to be put up at the soon-to-be-opened “ipot restaurant” across the road opposite Meet Fresh in Chinatown. All works were loosely based around the famous Chinese artwork, “across the MingQing”.
So come down, grab a feed and one of those slimy Taiwanese desserts afterwards.

Drew the little repeated icons for the cover of Concrete Playground’s guide to Summer….even though it is over, this can still be purchased from the website in digital or hardcover versions.

Some draft logo work for band Apparitions of Null

The newest stuff ive been working on. Illustrations for furniture brand Pacific Green and their upcoming collection/tradeshow/catalogue. The concept behind these were to look almost like explorer sketches with the notion of travel in the 40’s. Stepping away from the brush, it was fun to try some cross hatching and lines I usually wouldnt do. Some exciting stuff coming from this project, most are still work in progress…
finally some personal stuff i’ve been working on. W.I.P…
Thats it for now,
open for freelance illustration work !
